Joined CABI BIOSCIENCE UK Centre (Egham), formerly the International Mycological Institute (IMI) on 24 July 1974 to work in culture preservation.
Awarded a PhD in Microbiology, for the study The evaluation and development of techniques for the preservation of living filamentous fungi, London University in 1986.

Became Curator of the CABI Genetic Resources Collection in 1987. Has over 40 publications in the field of Culture Collection Management and development of preservation techniques, taught/lectured in 19 countries and has led 3 international funded projects.

Currently chair of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) Committee on Postal, Quarantine and Safety Regulations, on the steering group of the World Data Centre for Microorganisms and treasurer of the European Culture Collection Organisation (ECCO).

A member of the UK Federation for Culture Collections Committee and is the UK National Culture Collections elected representative on the Culture Collection Advisory Group administering the New Strategy for UK Microbial Collections. Visiting Lecturer: University of Kent and University of Reading. Registered as British Council Consultant. Referee for Research Council project proposals and for papers in 6 Scientific Journals.
